1. INTRODUCTION

This privacy notice explains how and why we collect and use your personal information/data when you visit the Diaspora Portal (www.platform.diaspora.go.ke) and apply for online services embedded on the Portal.

2. PROCESSING OF YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION

When you visit and register on the Diaspora Portal or any Web App on our domain (@diaspora.go.ke), the State Department for Diaspora Affairs (SDDA) acts as a data controller. Thus, this privacy notice applies to collection, processing, and storage of your personal information (personal data) by SDDA.

3. REASON FOR COLLECTION OF PERSONAL INFORMATION/DATA

3.1 To enable SDDA offer you quality service

Before offering you the services you apply for through the Diaspora Portal, SDDA needs your personal information/data to help in processing your applications. Our services include evacuation and repatriation, diaspora in conflict with the law, tracing of lost persons, reporting death, registration of diaspora association, crisis mapping, diaspora remittances, counselling services, mobile consular services, etc. Some of these services (e.g. evacuation and counselling services) require submission of sensitive information/data to enable SDDA design tailored interventions that are most suitable to each applicant.

3.2 For monitoring Diaspora Portal security and performance

When you visit the Diaspora Portal or any Web App on our domain (@diaspora.go.ke), we may use cookies and page-tagging techniques to collect the request made by your browser to the server. This may include your IP address, the date and time of connection, the version of your web browser, and the webpage you visited. We use this information to ensure the security and performance of the Portal. We may access and disclose this information as necessary in the event of a cybersecurity concern or incident to the relevant Authorities.

3.3 To allow you to use additional functionality

We may use third-party services on the Diaspora Portal or any Web App on our domain. These services may allow you to share our webpages, news, and publications via social media. If you use them, your IP address may be collected by the third parties.

3.4 To improve our service to you

We may use Google Analytics to collect standard internet log information (including your IP address) to understand how visitors use the Portal and improve its usability, accessibility, and functionality. See the Google Privacy Policy for more information.

3.5 To remember preferences

4. WHAT HAPPENS WITH THE INFORMATION/DATA COLLECTED?

We are committed to protecting the information/data collected through our Diaspora Portal or any Web App on our domain. We collect only limited personal data necessary for processing your applications, securing and improving the Portal, and analyzing usage. We do not collect sensitive data such as race, ethnic origin, beliefs, genetic or biometric data, property details, or sexual orientation.

5. TRANSFERRING YOUR INFORMATION OUTSIDE KENYA

Data collected through the Diaspora Portal or any Web App on our domain is processed and stored on servers located in Kenya. We do not transfer personal data outside Kenya unless directed by relevant Kenyan Authorities.
